Steven E. Handwerker Ph.D. D. Div received his doctorate degree from New York University, and post-doctoral certification from Hofstra University. He is licensed in psychology in N.Y. (’84), Florida (’96). He began his practice as head of Psychological Services at “The Wholistic Health Center” in 1974 in Manhasset N.Y., an institution that he helped found and develop into a college offering degrees in the study of Alternative medicine, now located in Syosset, N.Y. now has over 35 years of experience working with individuals, couples and families. Since 1997, he has been the Founder and Chairperson for the International Association for the Advancement of Human Welfare, Inc a 501-c-3 not for profit. The organization enters its 28th year; its direction and purpose is to teach and promote values that promote peace on an individual, community and national level (www.peacewk.org Dr. Handwerker was the first Chairman of Membership for the Division of Peace Psychology of the American Psychological Association, and began the Spirituality and Humanitarian Practices Working Group in that Division in 1996. He is a member of the Scientific and Professional Board for the National Center for Crisis Management (American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress), a division of Homeland Security. His work to create paradigms for peace since 1996 have been in the arena of fostering humanitarian and sustainable interventions in devastated communities and building interFaith dialogue and harmony within and between the Faiths in order to create more stability in communities. To enhance his efficacy in the peace building and conflict resolution arenas he became a Licensed Supreme Court Mediator(2000). As a corporate consultant, in working with groups; assisting PIs and Security Professionals to better detect, intervene and prevent work place violence and addiction issues since 1970.
He has authored 7 books and many articles on Peace Psychology and lectures regularly at APA conventions (over 250 in the past 20 years) as well as at local colleges and interfaith organizations. His lectures focus on Peace, Humanitarian and Sustainable Interventions and Paradigms and Humanistic Psychology. Dr. Handwerker is a practitioner of Tang Soo Do Karate and has attained a sixth degree black belt (YukDan). He is a Reiki master and continues to serve on an international Reiki Healing Circle for over 25 years. He and his wife Michelle have been married for 5 decades and have two children Diana and Lucas, both of whom are engaged in healing and peace building professions.
